Attrition - What is this?

  • Attrition of subjects during the study (often accompanied by a flow diagram)

    • Applicable guidelines: MDAR, CONSORT, ARRIVE

    • What SciScore expects: A statement reporting the dropout of any subjects or samples.

  • What does SciScore do with Attrition statements

    • If we find a statement about attrition, then SciScore expects to find the following items (randomization, blinding, power);

  • Examples

    • “Of these, 21 ticks could not be removed from the birds and 162 ticks were lost due to technical problems during nucleic acid extraction, resulting in 1,150 ticks available for analysis.”

    • “All enrolled participants finished the study, i.e., there was no attrition.” **

    • “The attrition rate in our study was 3% (n = 1 participant), which is relatively low for a study of patients with chronic diseases using a fitness tracker.” **

  • Please note, we have just discovered that the sentences with ** are not recognized, because classifier for attrition is not working as expected. We have a fix in place, but will need to work on an updated version of the SciScore tool. We apologize for the inconvenience.
